"As you all know, I believe the biggest problem facing MLB’s future is not player salary growth, but terrible owners."
It seems like MLB disproportionately has worse owners than other sports, and I'm not sure why that is. The NBA doesn't have a John Fisher or a Bob Nutting, let alone both of them, and also a half-dozen others.
In other sports, the bad owners are usually the ones who are trying so hard to win that they make a mess of things, like Justin Ishbia's brother Mat in Phoenix.
I don't think that was the case in MLB until one of the owners was made the Commissioner (Bud Selig). I think up until then the Commissioner ruled for the good of the game not the good of the owners. The game has suffered for that switch in allegiance ever since
Yes, I think there's a lot of truth to that. Unfortunately it seems like it's become the accepted practice in the Big Four sports in the decades since.
Molly, I am a White Sox fan and I seriously would love to know where this supposed “debt” even comes from? The team spends less on literally everything than every other team. The controlling owner doesn’t even believe in modern baseball. He still wants to operate like it’s 1957. They don’t pay rent on the stadium they occupy. The owner is also owner of the concession company and the distribution service. If there is debt it’s because of sincerely gross mismanagement and incompetence.
OH, by the way, a fan was wounded by a BULLET, that we still don’t know where it came from! MLB letting this man run a franchise is an absolute disgrace. Not launching its own investigation is even worse!
I’m very sorry for the rant, I guess I was triggered.
The thought crossed my mind that perhaps he has offloaded other (failed) investments onto the White Sox, selling that business bad assets behind the scenes. Pure speculation of course, but I cannot conceive of any other way a Major League Baseball team could be in debt when so clearly underinvesting compared to other teams.
Jerry Reinsdorf suffers from the same delusion as Jerry Jones: Their past championship teams have NOTHING to do with the on field personnel.
Their “reality”: It was their genius as owners that led to the success of the dynasty Bulls and the dynasty Cowboys. How dare Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen & Friends or Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin et. al. think that they had ANYTHING to do with those teams winning?!??!

I think you might want to start by looking at the Commissioner. Is he for the sport or is he for the owners' profits?
I don't know that any sport has a commissioner who isn't focused on advocating for the owners?

Although also Reinsdorf still owns the Chicago Bulls FWIW...
He does, but he's still-bad-but-much-much-better as an NBA owner.
Judge, Mookie and now Lindor. Players need to watch their little piggies while in LA

Love your writing!
