"The Dodgers vs. Padres Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN scored nearly 2 million viewers. It was the most-watched non-Red Sox vs. Yankees broadcast on the network in almost six years."
No, it was the FIRST non-Red Sox vs. Yankees broadcast on the network in almost six years.
OK, I know, but exaggerating for effect has its virtues.
I don’t even see what you’d punish Meulens for. But I expect the pilots will be fired or at least lose the privilege of flying charter flights. I’ll confer with my pilot friend on Monday night.
Side note: Jackson Holliday is now 1/27 and I've seen a handful of his ABs and he looks lost. Tbf, I'd never heard of him before Molly's recent article - I've never been much interested in minor league players.
I looked up his minor league stats tonight.
2022 - ripped through the Florida Complex League
2023 - incredibly, he was playing A ball in the Carolina League one year ago today. He destroyed A, High-A and AA ball. By the time he got to AAA it was late in the year and he only got 75 ABs which were OK, nothing terrible, nothing great.
2024 - a few games in AAA and called up
He is 20 years old and doesn't turn 21 until December and looks every bit of it. Looking at his MiLB stats I'm not sure what type of player he is expected to be. He hasn't stolen a ton of bases, hasn't hit a bunch of HRs, but has a high average. What was the hurry in bringing him up? For a team coming off a 100-win season it is very strange he was rushed into this situation where he has clearly looked overmatched.
I remember watching this documentary a while back, so I'm sure the FAA will take this pretty seriously. That pilot is definitely gonna get a talking to :S
Montgomery was making his very first start of the season, so an even shorter ‘Spring training in April’ to get into fighting shape than Snell, who was making his *third* start. And Montgomery was brilliant. Snell? Not so much.
I have always believed Montgomery was the best bet of the two hurlers in the Boras 4. Forget Snell’s two Cy Youngs. Montgomery was the one to sign.
Everyone gives Houck the credit, but frankly the Guards deserve more credit. It took a great performance from the Guards pitching, and efficiency from their batters to get out of there in 1:49. Full disclosure, as a lifelong Tribe fan, I flipped it on expecting the sixth inning and caught the last two outs. To their credit, and due to the early finish, Rick Manning and Matt Underwood were making dinner reccomendations for Tribe fans in town.
@Molly Knight, I love your writing and perspective on all things baseball. I would just like to speak up for the Rockies players and prospects who are out there busting their asses every day and all of the off season trying to fulfill their potential. It's personal for me since I'm following a player they drafted out of high school in 2020. His grandmother was a dear friend of mine. We all know the top prospects get drafted by the weakest teams. (Think of the USC quarterbacks who were sent to be slaughtered by the Jets.) Through following him I've become acutely aware of the fine line between criticism and disrespect. I hate to see these young players dismissed out of hand because the team that chose them is a perennial loser. Also, as you allude to, the altitude determines that no mid-career pitcher will sign with them and the pitchers they bring up will leave when they become free agents, so in that respect the team is doomed. Anyway, I'd love to see the players evaluated on their individual merits. I understand the difficulty. I can't imagine using your best pitcher to pitch run. How do you excuse that? You don't.

Bam Bam! Bochy’s batting coach back in the glory days in SF, three rings to show for it
Montgomery v Snell… the guy the Giants should have signed v the one they did … 1-0 AZ in the 4th so no dramatic conclusions yet
Update on Montgomery v Snell…
Welp, we all know how that went.
Montgomery was making his very first start of the season, so an even shorter ‘Spring training in April’ to get into fighting shape than Snell, who was making his *third* start. And Montgomery was brilliant. Snell? Not so much.

Maybe John Fisher dropped a couple mil on the Rockies to get the heat off his suckitude.
