People don't talk about the time Chris Sale cut up the jerseys? I must not be people because I think about this all the time and tell non-baseball people the story at least once a year. It's simply an incredible thing that happened and I will not allow its memory-holing!
For a 25 YO to be less aware than I am of what the Internet and Social Media can do to a story is shocking. As someone that first visited Yankee Stadium (the real one) in 1972, I can assure young Mr. Dobbins that the Bleacher Creatures will be ready for him. One also hopes (for Mr. Dobbins' sake) that that Bosox media relations people quietly provided him remedial training.
I think it's all being blown out of proportion a little. Johnny Damon also said he wouldn't never play for the Yankees and he gladly took their money. It's just something people say around here. I admit that the Lying Dad thing 6a little weird, but it's Father's Day weekend, so let him have that one.
Respectfully disagree. Damon changed his mind. Boggins passed along misinformation. Further: It's hard to believe that he DIDN'T fact check Dad. The Internet is full of information - good and bad - about all of us. What kid WOULDN'T check?
So Lance Dobbins pretended to be an ex-minor leaguer? A man named Bill Henry pretended to be an ex-major leaguer, fooling his (third) wife and the Lakeland baseball community for 20 years. If only he hadn't died he would still be getting away with it...
the Post headlines are such a hoot, always have been (incl the most famous headline in NY history, ‘headless body in topless bar’ lol)
god, I miss the days of buying your local tabloid, sitting in the subway car (in Philly, the trolley! the Daily News!) while reading it, the headline blaring out its message to all (of course, half the people around you were reading it too)
and the Post would never ever pass up the chance to fuel a new generation Yankees-Red Sox feud!
This is such a non-story. I can’t believe it’s still getting attention. Dads exaggerate stories for their sons who internalize those stories as the truth. It’s a harmless falsehood. The kid was raised a Red Sox fan regardless, of course he hates the Yankees.
And Dobbins just shoved against the Yankees again!
I love that the Sale story that Molly linked to started with a "Florida man" reference!
I think of the uniform cutting-up as Chris Sale being 'colorful' as well as passionate, and would hope it makes it into his baseball obit. As a Red Sox fan, I appreciated his caring and his sense of responsibility.

I second Amelia's point. This isn't a story, it's the stuff of legend, and I bring it up at every opportunity. It should be on Sale's HOF plaque.

(Great column Molly!)

I mean, it's your Dad. Why fact check it? And Damin can change his mind. I just mean people say stuff.
I just realized the games this weekend are at fenway, not in the bronx! I fixed the post
Baseball is old, and very little is new.
