Molly, thank you for this article. I am a lifelong practicing Catholic and baseball fan. I am still trying to wrap my mind around an American being elected as Pope. Pope Leo XIV is only three years older than I am, so it’s possible he will be Pope for the rest of my life. I pray for him and wish him every success. If I may make a suggestion, I would ask you to refer to him as Pope Leo going forward. The Pope Bob references here are humorous and written with the best of intentions. I get it; it’s very surprising to everyone. Once this becomes “old news” I think the Pope Bob thing could get a little touchy. Thank you for your consideration and for all that you do! Wishing everyone the best, even Cubs fans!

For anyone not already familiar with Chicago-based Obvious Shirts (comfy and funny!) they’ve put out a line of Pope Leo-related, baseball-ish shirts a few hours after the announcement. Proceeds to benefit the local food bank and diocese.

had to be a Sox fan, just had to be - all his missionary years, working with the downtrodden, the neglected, the long suffering - just had to be Sox

Best comment I saw was, “Of course he’s a White Sox fan! Who ever heard of a Cardinal rooting for the Cubs?”

Man, I wish I had thought of that myself.

As a Catholic and a White Sox fan, I cannot express how completely my Thursday afternoon was derailed by this announcement. This was certainly not on my bingo card for 2025, or ever really.

Molly, I’m a lifelong Cubs fan, and part of a family of lifelong White Sox fans. It was a joy to get to laugh through this together. Brilliant and hilarious writing. You’re always my favorite read, but this one really…knocks it out of the park. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Thanks for this!
